TEMPORARY Crowns & Bridges
  • • Will wear temporary restorations until your permanent restoration is made.
  • • Normal for the gum around the tooth to be tender for a day or two. If the tenderness persists any longer than two days, please call the office immediately so we can check the temporary restoration and make any needed corrections.
  • • CALL if the temporary restoration comes loose or breaks. If the temporary restoration is off for even a short time, the tooth can shift position and cause the final restoration to not fit well.
  • • Avoid eating with the temporary restoration as much as possible.
  • • Carefully clean around the restoration with a toothbrush. DO NOT floss around the temporary restoration.
  • • Avoid sticky foods and chewing gum.
  • • Slight discomfort, sensitivity and tenderness are possible after a tooth has had dental treatment, but call if it lasts more than a day or two.
AFTER Crown & Bridge Delivery
  • • DO NOT CHEW hard foods on the restorations for 24 hours from the time they were cemented. The cement must mature for about 24 hours to have optimum strength.
  • • Mild sensitivity to hot or cold is common. It should disappear gradually over a few weeks.
  • • DO NOT CHEW ice or other hard objects. AVOID chewing very sticky foods such as “hard tack” candies because they can damage or loosen the restoration.
  • • Brush & Floss daily as instructed.
  • • If your bite seems “wrong” call for an adjustment appointment.
DELIVERY of DENTURES / PARTIALS
  • • It is normal to experience some discomfort, sore spots and speech problems while getting used to your new dentures. Your dentures may need a few adjustments until you are comfortable. To help with speech, read aloud for a few minutes every day. Your mouth will adjust, and your speech will improve.
  • • Your bite may need to be adjusted as your dentures settle.
  • • It is important to clean your denture with a denture brush and a mild toothpaste. Soaking your denture once a week is denture cleaner (eg; Polident) will keep them clean.
  • • For a partial dentures with metal clasps special care should be taken while inserting and removing them. Keep your partials and remaining natural teeth absolutely clean to prevent gum disease and tooth decay.
  • • You should return to have your dentures and mouth checked at least once a year.
  • • With proper care we expect you to have years of satisfied use of your dentures. However overtime, there are changes in your jawbone and gums. When this occurs, your dentures/partials will feel loose and may require relining. Wearing ill-fitting dentures/partials for too long without refitting can cause severe bone loss and very serious oral disease. Please call our office if these symptoms occur.

AFTER Implant
The outcome of this treatment depends largely on the part you play in the following instructions. At Cosmetic Dental Center we stand behind our work. However, we need your help. We cannot control the conditions in which the implants are subject to when outside of our office. Therefore, there are a few requirements that must be followed.

The next 3—6 months following the placement of the implant is the most critical phase of the healing process, when the implant is becoming stabilized. It is important that this take place without the implants being subjected to any strain. You should therefore, be extremely careful to maintain a suitable nutritious diet at all times during the healing period. Foods that contain tomatoes, onions, pepper, or spices may be irritating and should be avoided. Do not bite down or chew on the implant site as it could cause the bone not to integrate to the implant. Below are some examples of acceptable foods:

  • • Cooked cereals such as oatmeal, cream of wheat.
  • • Well mashed fruits, applesauce, yogurt.
  • • Broth, bouillon, soups and stews.
  • • Ground beef, soft broiled.
  • • Baked or broiled fish.
  • • Broiled or stewed chicken (finely chopped).
  • • Potatoes (baked, broiled or whipped).
  • • Asparagus, peas, carrots, lima beans, string beans.
  • • Noodles, macaroni and cheese.
  • • Cottage cheese, cream cheese, canned, cooked or stewed fruits.
  • • Fresh vegetable juices and cooked vegetables.
  • • Milkshakes, ice cream, puddings, jello and custards.
  • • A blender may be helpful in processing foods.

It is also very important that you maintain good oral hygiene

  • • Brush after every meal and before bedtime.
  • • Floss at least once a day.
  • • Follow any special instructions given to you by our office.
  • • Careful use of a waterpik may help to maintain hygiene.
  • • Do not rinse or spit for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  • • Do not smoke for at least 24 hours.
  • • No smoking is preferred due to a greater chance for implant success.
  • • Use a warm salt water rinse three to four times a day for the first week.

A professional dental cleaning is recommended every three months until otherwise notified by the doctor.

Silver Fillings & Tooth Colored Fillings
  • • Expect sensitivity for the first couple of weeks. REmember, placing a filling in any tooth is actual tooth surgery.
  • • Cold sensitivity may persist for several days.
  • • Do not eat or drink (hot liquids) while numb to avoid injury to the numb tissues.
  • • A new filling may feel grainy at first.
  • • A new filling may feel different due to the bumps and grooves from the anatomy of the tooth.
  • • Do not chew hard food on a new filling for 24 hours.
  • • Do not floss for at least 8 hours on a new silver filling.
  • • You may experience galvanic shock with a metal filling for a day or two. This is from saliva and different metals touching.
  • • If the bite feels “high” after 2 or 3 days, please call our office for an adjustment appointment.
  • • Remember you only have to brush and floss the teeth you want to keep..
